For the Meat Filling
- 500 g ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 cup peas fresh or frozen
- 1 cup diced carrots
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp flour optional, for thickening
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Salt and pepper
- Fresh thyme optional
For the Mashed Potato Topping
- 4 –5 large potatoes peeled and boiled
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk or cream
- Salt and pepper
- Optional: 1/2 cup shredded cheese for extra browning
Cook the filling: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until soft. Add the ground meat and cook until browned.
Add vegetables: Stir in carrots and peas and cook for 2–3 minutes.
Flavor it: Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and fresh thyme if using.
Add broth and thicken: Pour in beef broth. For a thicker filling, sprinkle in flour and stir well. Simmer for 5 minutes until the mixture slightly reduces.
Make the mashed potatoes: Mash the cooked potatoes with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
Assemble: Spread the meat mixture evenly into a casserole dish. Spoon the mashed potatoes on top and use a fork to create little peaks for browning.
Bake: Bake at 200°C (400°F) for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp.
Serve: Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
