- 2 lbs 900g Yukon gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg optional, for warmth
- 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese or Swiss cheese
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese grated
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)
Prep the potatoes: Peel (optional) and slice potatoes thinly (about ⅛ inch) using a mandoline or sharp knife.
Make the cream sauce: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté garlic for 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat.
Assemble the gratin: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half the potatoes, pour half the cream mixture, and sprinkle with half the Gruyère. Repeat with remaining potatoes, cream, and Gruyère.
Top & bake: Sprinkle Parmesan evenly on top. Cover loosely with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake 25–30 minutes more until golden and bubbly and potatoes are tender.
Serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley.
Tips & Variations
Extra flavor: Add caramelized onions between the potato layers.
Cheese swap: Try sharp cheddar for a bolder flavor.
Lighter version: Use half-and-half instead of heavy cream.
Make-ahead: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance, refrigerate, and bake when ready.
Best Served With: Roast chicken, turkey, beef, ham, fresh green beans, roasted veggies, or a crisp salad.
Storage
Refrigerate in an airtight container up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
